The MAFES Analytical Laboratory and Maine Soil Testing Service is located in Deering Hall on the University of Maine campus. (driving direction)
We are available Monday through Friday between 8 and 5. We provide analytical services at reasonable prices to the public and to researchers.
We analyze soil, plant tissue, compost, manure, irrigation water, wood ash, fertilizers, organic residuals and other materials for nutrient content, organic matter, lead and other trace elements.
Thank you to all our customers for using our testing services during 2015. Due to your interest (and the long, warm fall) we have had yet another record year of soil, compost, and manure samples. Thank you for your patience as we worked through our backlog of samples.
We have already had a huge response to our Soil Testing Winter Discount – over 1000 samples in the first 2 weeks! Be sure to send any stored soil samples you have before February 26 to take advantage of the discount period. During this period the charge for a Standard Soil Test is just $12. For more information, click on Sample Submission Forms.
High tunnel growers are already sampling ahead of late winter/early spring planting dates. High tunnel recommendations are substantially higher than those for field-grown crops, to compensate for higher productivity and nutrient demand. We are excited to be involved in a new 3-year SARE-funded project on High Tunnel Fertility and Pest Management, in conjunction with UNH, UVT, MOFGA and other partners, to further refine all aspects of High Tunnel Growing.
